rough draft of LETTER TO SUPPORT DAVID GiLBERT'S PAROLE

Good Day- I support the granting of parole to David Gilbert at this coming hearing. It is my understanding that he has served as a mentor to many younger inmates in their struggle to overcome violence and depression and is deeply remorseful of the crimes of 1981, and could enrich the community in part due to his life, which certainly appears to be, in a word, inspiring. David has served 40 years on his sentence, which is more than any other inmate in NY State that I know of, and and further I would like to suggest that recidivism is nearly non- existent in the age group of over 70. Rev. Dr. Emma Jordan-Simpson (Executive Director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Nyack NY) has endorsed the clemency granted to David Gilbert by outgoing governor Cuomo as "well thought-out and compassionate". The Reverend Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of South Africa has also endorsed compassionate release for David. Three other Nobel Peace Prize Laureates have endorsed freedom for David as well as 160 New York Law Professors and others. David has been remorseful for years as is well known and has mentored younger prisoners toward a faith and hope perspective, and has mediated disputes inside, promoting non-violent problem solving. His work in HIV/AIDS education has been described as "a national model". I hope the board can be supportive of this timely and humanitarian release. Sincerely, M---------
